Berlin Nahum holds an engineering degree from the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon and a Master of Science in Robotics from the University of Coventry (United Kingdom). After graduating, he moved to the field of medical engineering. He holds various management positions in renowned companies specializing in surgical robotics. Following these field experiments, notably in the operating theater and collaborating with the most eminent surgeons, Bertin Nahum decided to start in the field of surgical robotics. In 2002, after having been awarded the National Contest to support the creation of innovative technology companies of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research, Bertin Nahum founded Medtech S.A. Medtech S.A Developed at the Alès Mines Incubator and now based in Montpellier (Hérault), Medtech S.A designs, develops and markets support robots for minimally invasive surgery of the central nervous system. The first surgical robot developed by Medtech S.A, BRIGIT, is intended for knee surgery. In 2006, Zimmer Holdings, the world leader in orthopedic surgery, purchased the entire BRIGIT patent portfolio. Medtech S.A then decides to reinvest these resources in the design of a new robotic assistance technology. The second robot, ROSA Brain, for neurosurgery, is designed.
The pathologies involved in the use of ROSA Brain include epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, generalized dystonia, cavernoma, and hydrocephalus. To date, thousands of patients have been operated using the ROSA Brain6 robot, which is present in many hospitals in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. In July 2014, Medtech S.A received the CE mark for its second robot, ROSA Spine, extending the company's field of intervention to minimally invasive spinal surgery. This regulatory authorization has allowed the marketing of ROSA Spine in Europe. At the end of 2014, a first patient was successfully operated using the ROSA Spine robot by the neurosurgery department of the Amiens-Picardie University Hospital, as part of a degenerative pathology of the spine. This new minimally invasive surgery assistance robot is primarily intended for pedicle screwing, with more than one million surgical procedures performed each year worldwide. In November 2013, Medtech S.A was listed on the stock market, raising € 20 million on the regulated NYSE Euronext market in Paris, compartment C9. In July 2016, the US group Zimmer Biomet (NYSE: ZBH), acquires Medtech S.A, for 164 million euros. Quantum Surgical On January 31, 2017, Bertin Nahum leaves the Zimmer Biomet group. In February 2017, he announced the creation of Quantum Surgical, accompanied by former Medtech associates who became partners. Based in Montpellier (Hérault), within the Eureka Park, Quantum Surgical is dedicated to minimally invasive treatment of liver cancer.
This pathology is the second most deadly cancer and affects more than 800,000 new people each year worldwide, including 8,000 in France. In June 2018, Quantum Surgical announced a 10 million euro fundraiser from Ally Bridge Group (ABG), a global investment group specializing in the life sciences. A new fundraising is planned before the end of July 2019. Moreover, in February 2019 Quantum Surgical is the winner of a call for projects launched by the State and the Occitania Region as part of the third component of the Investments for the Future Program operated by Bpifrance, for the development of its project of artificial intelligence.
distinctions In September 2012, Bertin Nahum is ranked the fourth most revolutionary high-tech entrepreneur in the world by a publication of the Canadian magazine Discovery Series, behind Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and James Cameron. Among the Discovery Series selection criteria, the entrepreneur had to be the bearer of an innovation that was both revolutionary and impacting people's lives. A year later, in September 2013, Bertin Nahum received the knight insignia of the Legion of Honor, presented by Fleur Pellerin, Minister Delegate, Small and Medium Enterprises of Innovation and the Digital Economy. In November 2014, Bertin Nahum received the honorary title of Doctor of Technology from the University of Coventry (United Kingdom), in recognition of his essential contribution to the medical profession and the improvement of surgical procedures through robotic technology .
